Typical Day in the Scottish Highlands

Day 12 Walking, Monday, June 17,
Bracarina House, Invermoriston to Fiddler’s at Oakdale, Drumnadrochit,
14 Official miles, but my route was shortened by taking a bus to Alltsigh that cut 5 miles off...but the feet did walk 9 miles in 5 long hours.  And 27417 Steps

Richard and Heather my hosts were very chipper in matching purple shirts and aprons this morning. It was Richard who suggested the bus alternative to help save the heel torture.

Breakfast was scrambled eggs with salmon on top.  Plus a hot homemade scone was hand delivered by Richard, which I was encouraged to take in a plastic bag for “elevens” (morning tea/coffee break).  Put 3 pats of British butter on it and also took 4 of the little wrapped cheeses.

Returned the house-loaned croc shoes to the drying room and collect my warm boots.  Depart.

The pack and I were having a ‘time-out’ from each other on opposite side of the path.  Enough is enough.

While waiting for the City Link bus an elderly man joined me.  He was going to Inverness, 30 miles north, to have his eyes checked and would leave his car in the lot at Invermoriston.  In Scotland if you are over the age of 60 you can ride public transportation for FREE.   Hey, I qualify 😃

All day - heavy rain, rain, light rain, misty rain, no rain, sunshine - start process over again, and again.

Loch Ness looking southwest back towards Fort Augustus.

Only hikers today were the two German guys from breakfast, and Katherine, once more.  The Great Glen Way is certainly not the high traffic route of the West Highland Way.

My room tonight is above an old restaurant/pub and the window looks right out at people passing on the street.  Only two outlets for plugging things in.  Either the tv or not tv.  Either the hot water heater for tea and instant coffee, or the small room electric heater.  One of those previous has to be removed to charge the iPhone.   But, the old bathroom has heating under the floor tiles.  I might just go stand in there to warm the cold toes up.

There is a Scottish fiddler on the wall next to my bed.
